The office of kasztelan (or “castellan”) was created in the early 13th century by the Piast Kings. Over the course of centuries, Poland’s castellans – and their legal and spiritual successors – were charged with managing, maintaining, and expanding many of the historical buildings and estates that lie at the heart of our business.

That spirit of faithful, innovative stewardship demonstrated by generations of castellans is something that we can look to today for inspiration, as we strive to preserve, adapt, and revitalize uniquely treasured homes and post-industrial structures for novel commercial and residential uses in the 21st century.

The history of the family that established the Łazy Palace estate is intertwined with that of the Chopin family and the Skarbek family, in whose nearby manor house the composer Fryderyk Chopin was born in 1810. Indeed, only a gentle stretch of farmland separates Łazy from the manor where Chopin’s parents met and worked together for years.

As the son of a Skarbek himself, the founder of the Łazy estate was related both to the Chopins’ employer, Kacper Skarbek, and to Fryderyk Chopin’s godfather and artistic champion, Count Fryderyk Skarbek. The occupants of Łazy Palace and the Chopin family were essentially neighbors within early 19th-century Sochaczew county, and the estates on which they lived have experienced much shared history over the last two centuries.

The origins of the village of Łazy date back to at least 1451, the first recorded reference to the locale. The estate that now houses Łazy Palace had come into existence by the 18th century, when it was the property of Onufry Bromirski, a nobleman who served as the starosta or castellan of Płock and Płońsk and who built a wooden manor house on the site that is now the Łazy Palace estate.

The Łazy Palace estate is an opportunity to own a part of the Chopin family heritage. It includes a 311 m², 12-room wing of a 19th-century palace on 4.37 ha of enclosed park land and has potential for commercial redevelopment as a hotel, resort, or performance center, drawing on its proximity to the Chopin birthplace museum in Żelazowa Wola and the estate’s links with the Chopin and Skarbek families. Łazy lies just south of Kampinos National Park, 20 km from Poland’s new air hub, and 40 km west of Warsaw.

The kamienica is an urban residence built of brick or stone and possessing at least two stories. The kamienice that line the market squares of Poland’s older cities may date back to Renaissance or Baroque times.

The folwark (“grange” or “farmhouse”) had appeared in Poland by the 14th century as a kind of building associated with grain production on monasteries’ estates. Some folwarki resemble especially plain manor houses; however, a folwark was more purely functional in nature.

The fortified stone zamek or “castle” was a successor to the gród, a fortified wooden settlement that had been constructed in the territory that is now Poland from ancient times up through the early Middle Ages.
